Grasping the Last Straw
By Alan Burkhart
Nov 11, 2005

The Democrat Party is a house of cards and is quite likely to be blown down sometime quite soon. This fact is obvious when one examines the party’s frankly erratic behavior over the last couple of years. Even old-guard Democrats like (1)Zell Miller and (2)Jimmy Carter have spoken out against the lunacy of the present-day Democrats.

Take a quick look at recent Democrat depravities…

First, it was conclusively proven that (3)Valerie Plame did not meet the criteria for covert agent protection at the time she was supposedly outed. And yet Patrick Fitzgerald, himself a recent subject of a (4)misconduct investigation, dragged this fiasco out for nearly two years while costing the taxpayers millions of dollars. In the end, poor Scooter Libby gets indicted because he couldn’t remember the details of a conversation from two years prior. If poor memory is a crime I’d better retain an attorney. I can’t recall the details of conversations from two days ago, and last week is a complete mystery.

And why are many of the Democrats acting as if they’ve scored some major victory with the Libby indictment? Libby was indicted due to a bit of frankly thin evidence of his having lied under oath. The indictment has no bearing whatsoever upon whether Valerie Plame’s identity was under CIA protection as a covert agent.

Additionally, the Wilsons continue to blather that the Bush Administration outed poor Valerie in retaliation for Mr. Wilson having disputed President Bush’s assertion that Saddam had tried to purchase (5)uranium from Niger. And yet, Joe Wilson often introduced her to others as his “CIA wife.” And, when columnist (6)Robert Novak contacted the CIA regarding whether Valerie was indeed employed there, the CIA gladly confirmed that yes, Mrs. Plame was indeed a CIA employee. If Valerie Plame was a covert operative, why did the CIA confirm her to Novak?

Then there is that recent ploy by the Democrats to drag the Senate into a closed meeting to discuss whether Bush lied about our reasons for engaging in the liberation of Iraq. Excuse me, but hasn’t that ground been covered already? Claims that Bush lied about the intelligence data on Saddam and our reasons for entering Iraq have already been thoroughly refuted. Bush has, in my opinion, made some rather large missteps in the War on Terror, but that does not negate the unfortunate necessity of the war itself.

And let’s not forget that the Democrats were all in favor of the war when it was politically beneficial for them to do so. There are numerous well-documented (7)public statements to that effect.

All the while, nutcases like (8)Barbra Streisand call for Bush’s impeachment even though the man has committed no crimes whatsoever. Still-nuttier cases call for Bush to be (9)assassinated.

In spite (or perhaps because) of all the frantic ranting and raving from the Left, the USA seems to be continuing its rightward drift even while the Republicans have wavered off course over the last couple of years. As the Extreme Left continues to drag the Democrats farther away from core American values, more and more Americans are turning to the Republicans as their party of choice. This is a good sign, provided that the Republicans get out of their “Big Tent” and stick to the principles that got them elected to power to begin with.

Even (10)blacks, for decades the Democrats’ most reliable source of votes, have begun to question the agenda of the current incarnation of the party. That’s a bad sign for the Democrats. Should they lose a significant portion of the black vote, the Democrat Party will crumble into mediocrity. Compared to where they are now, that might be an improvement.

Lastly, the looming confirmation of (11)Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court would severely damage the Democrats ability to thwart the will of the people via activist judges. How many times in recent years have liberal activist groups used equally liberal courts to invalidate a perfectly legal piece of legislation? I’ve lost count.

The bottom line is that the Democrats are grasping any straw they believe might hold the magic key to their return to power. The Loony Left has no new ideas, no moral foundation and people are losing faith the Left’s ability to govern. Without anything positive to bring to the table, they are reduced to using lies and distortions in an attempt to discredit a moderately successful Republican president. The Left has had half a century to prove the merits of their way of running a country. They’ve failed.
